Bite-Proof or Scavenge-Proof?
Most muzzles are designed to be either bite-proof, scavenge-proof, or both. Understanding the difference is key to choosing the right muzzle for your dog's needs.
Bite-Proof Muzzles
A bite-proof muzzle is recommended for dogs with a history of biting, aggression, reactivity, fear, or anxiety, as well as dogs whose behaviour is still unknown, such as foster or newly adopted dogs. It can also provide extra safety for powerful breeds or dogs that play roughly.
If there is any possibility your dog may bite in certain situations, a bite-proof muzzle is the safest choice. If you're unsure, it's generally better to choose a bite-proof option.
Scavenge-Proof Muzzles
A scavenge-proof muzzle is designed to prevent dogs from eating or picking up items from the ground. This can be important for dogs that scavenge, eat non-food items, lick surfaces excessively, or live in areas where poisonous bait or toxins may be present.
Not all muzzles prevent scavenging, so it's important to choose one that matches your dog's habits and environment.
Choosing the Right Muzzle
Some dogs need a muzzle that is bite-proof, some need one that is scavenge-proof, and some require both. The best option will depend on your dog's behaviour, lifestyle, and the reason they're wearing a muzzle.
