'Bite-Proof' or 'Scavenge-Proof'?

'Bite proof/scavenge proof' is a term used by most 'big store' companies that have been around for years and not updated in line with what we know now from learning from mistakes and growing!

These terms should be relevant to the material or make of the muzzle (the muzzle doesn't collapse under a bite or has less gaps at the front for scavenging). Even if you have a solid metal muzzle this does not mean a dog cannot bite/nip/scavenge through the gaps if allowed either by poor training/muzzle management or an accident. What may be 'biteproof or scavenge proof' to one dog is differnt to the next.

A muzzle is a training aid to keep everyone safe. It will not change the behaviour and should not be expected to solve all your problems. Training and working with your dog is even more important.

You can read more information for each muzzle under the Muzzle Options tab in the menu

Bite Risk Muzzles

When purchasing muzzles you will see the wording 'bite proof', ALOT of companies wrongly claim this without any warnings that the muzzle can collapse under a bite or a dog can bite skin/fingers through the gaps msot muzzles have.

A solid muzzle is recommended for dogs with a history of biting, aggression, reactivity, fear, or anxiety, as well as dogs whose behaviour is still unknown, such as foster or newly adopted dogs. It can also provide extra safety for powerful breeds or dogs that play roughly.

All dogs can be bite risks if pushed, hurt, injured or scared which is why we recommend a muzzle that can handle a bite if needed.

Scavenger Muzzles

A muzzle may be listed as 'scavenge-proof' which is designed to prevent dogs from eating or picking up items from the ground. This can be important for dogs that scavenge, eat non-food items, lick surfaces excessively, or live in areas where poisonous bait or toxins may be present.

However most muzzles don't fully prevent scavenging, so it's important to choose one that matches your dog's habits and look at modifying the front to ensure there is no gaps and work on training/management to ensure the dog is not picking up anything.
